San Francisco Civic Center
Location: San Francisco, California Project Type: Urban Design Client: City of San Francisco Architect: KMD Architects
A global model for a sustainable resource district is under development by Mayor Gavin Newsom and the Clinton Global Initiative for San Francisco's Civic Center. The design artistically integrates waste water treatment, storm water collection, and energy generating devices such as wind turbines and solar panels within the context of a formal urban center. The design aims to both mitigate existing social problems and reinvigorate the public use of the district - outdoor 'rooms' provide thriving spaces for events, markets and demonstration plots for urban agriculture.
