MSLA collaborated with Skidmore Owings and Merrill on a series of projects to develop the San Francisco Veteran Affairs’ iconic Lands End medical campus. On the northwest bluffs overlooking the Golden Gate, SOM has designed a state of the art medical research facility and MSLA is knitting the new structure into the dramatic coastal bluff landscape. The building’s courtyard takes advantage of the south side of the building’s sheltered micro climate, providing a warm, intimate and contemplative outdoor space for scientists and patients alike. Working closely with SOM the integration of the interior and exterior spaces are carefully stitched together with thoughtful detailing and elegant materials. Monterey cypress trees drift into the space, visually connecting it with the existing groves that frame the site.
